General Discussion / Re: There's a Floor For That, And For Everyone!
« Last post by DestinyEvingar on September 12, 2017, 01:21:45 am »
https://sta.sh/01jp0pj0aj7c A basic floor plan, to help visualize! My apologies in advance, this is a lot of detail. I may have gotten carried away a bit XD

I have very happily claimed floor 727, and had a lot of fun designing it. To start, surrounding the floor on the outside of the tower is a grand, circular balcony, filled mostly with a garden on all sides. This is where visitors will usually arrive after stepping off of the elevator. There are entrances to it from inside the floor on all four walls, which is convenient as the inside is a square and the corners create areas that aren't easily passable from the outside. There's a pool on the west side that's surrounded by a raised wooden deck, and is an excellent view of the sunset. Elryn has a station for his bullet train on the south side (i've made sure only the toughest and sturdiest plants surround it so as to not have dead vegetation every time he drops by ^^), and it's a very quaint, almost Victorian station design, which you can imagine makes an amusing sight when his train is stopped there. The north side is mostly herbs and fruits/vegetables for cooking purposes. All sides save the south side have patio tables and chairs for outdoor seating, and the east side also has the equivalent of a large porch swing. All seating is covered in an eclectic variety of pillows and cushions, enchanted to be weather resistant so you can sit even directly after a storm.

Inside is a kind of eclectic collection of rooms. The northwest corner is living quarters, which includes my room, a room with multiple guest beds for sleepovers, and bathrooms attached to both. There's a retractable wall between my room and the guest room, also in case of sleepovers. It's much more fun when we all feel like we're in the same room, y'know?

My bed is situated in the northeast corner of my room. It's one of those bunk beds that's twin-sized on top and full-sized on the bottom, and it has a desk attached where I keep my laptop and a very comfortable computer chair in front of it. This desk tends to be an organized mess, with a small shelf filled with trinkets and sticky notes and other odds and ends, and a pink Barbie-themed lamp with small pedestals at the base which house even more trinkets. The full-sized bed is covered with gold sheets, a green duvet, and a pink quilt, while the twin-sized bed has red sheets and a black duvet. Small bedside tables extend from the head of both beds, and the one by the full-sized bed features a teacup-shaped Hello Kitty alarm clock. Both beds are covered with plushies such as Webkinz, and the full sized bed features my beloved pillow pet, a bumble bee named Mituna. In the northwest corner against the north wall is a dark wooden dresser for the majority of my clothes, with 2 tiny drawers on top, 1 on either side of a large vanity mirror. The small drawers contain several knick knacks and secret items, and are kept locked. To the left of the bathroom door is a small closet where I keep dresses, robes, and cosplays, as well as a door rack for shoes. The carpet is green and soft to the touch, and there's a floofy pink throw rug in the center of the room that's perfect for dancing on. The walls are also green on the top half, though a lighter shade than the carpet, and bronze on the lower half, and (save the retractable one) are covered with posters of all sizes that relate to basically all of my fandoms and things I like. There's a great fluffy blue beanbag in the southwest corner.

The guest room has the same soft green carpet and bronze and green walls of my room. The beds are all different sizes, have all sorts of different sheets on them at any given time, and the mattresses are of differing types to accommodate different sleeping needs. One can arrange their chosen bed however they please, and indeed, I encourage it, which often leaves the room looking eclectic at best, as the beds are all in different positions. There are also bedside tables for one to leave whatever they feel they need to upon.

The bathrooms are basically identical to each other. There's a shower situated in the northwest corner, made of heavily frosted glass panes to preserve modesty. The guest shower has more shelf space than mine, to allow multiple people to store their bath products at one time. The southwest corner is a closed-in toilet room, for practicality as well as to prevent unfortunate mishaps in case someone walks in at an unfortunate time. Between the shower and the toilet is a large bathtub, with several jacuzzi settings for a more relaxing bath time (very useful after a hard day of warring!). Most of the eastern wall is taken up by the sink, counter, and mirrors, and has plenty of cabinet space. The only difference in the 2 rooms is the placement of the linen shelves (usually reserved for towels, as the sink counter has plenty of space for toothbrushes and the like), due to door placement. My bathroom has it in the northeast corner, while the guest bathroom has it in the southeast corner. There are also towel bars next to the shower and on the wall over the tub. The walls of both bathrooms are cream, with a turquoise Greek-style pattern painted at about halfway up, and the floor is a turquoise tile. Fluffy white bath mats sit in front of the shower door and at the side of the tub.

Directly next to the bedrooms is the kitchen, which is why the herb/food garden is on the north side of the balcony, as it's closest. The walls are decorated tile in sea colors (blues and grays and greens), and the floor is white linoleum. It's got a nice stove, oven, and microwave, plus plenty of storage for pots and pans in the form of cabinets all around, and a few other cooking knick-knacks that I'll pull out as I need them. There's also a small island in the middle for eating quick meals when I don't feel like taking food back to my room or the living room, plus extra storage in the form of drawers that contain silverware and cooking utensils.

The northeast room is the gaming corner, where pretty much any gaming console you might want or need is available. There's a nice flat screen TV to hook them up to as you need, and a projector that projects onto the west wall of the room if you want to go all out or play a different game on a different console than someone else. The walls are gray in here save the projector wall, which is white in order to not affect colors, and the carpet is black and fuzzy. There are a variety of chairs to use, ranging from ones made specifically for gamers to flat out beanbags.

Directly south of the kitchen and gaming corner is the living room/den, the largest room on the floor. Here, the walls have warm oak paneling, and the carpet is soft and a deep red. A flat screen TV rests on the north wall in the northeast corner, and a plush black suede couch sits in front of it. A wooden coffee table sits in front of the couch. The east wall has large windows with dark gold blackout curtains, making the living room the best room to watch the sunrise from without being out on the balcony. A beautiful grand piano sits in the southeast corner of the room. In the center is a large table meant for dining purposes, though it can easily double as a gaming table for board games, card games, or a DnD session. Various potted plants and flowers fill the corners, sitting next to the TV and piano while filling in the otherwise empty southwest and northwest corners. Paintings and photographs fill in the remaining empty space on the walls. The photos are mostly of the Beacons and my family, though a few are also nature photographs, and the paintings are practically all by Leonid Afremov, one of my favorite modern painters who does beautiful, colorful oil paintings with just a palette knife.

The southeast corner of the floor is set aside as a small recording studio, fitted with high-end microphones and equipment to get the best sound from either my voice or my clarinet, depending on what I feel like recording. Others are also welcome to use it for their own purposes. The walls are covered with alternating panels of blue and black foam for sound-dampening purposes, and the carpet is thin and gray.

Directly beside the recording room is a small sun room. The southern wall is completely glass, to allow in as much sunlight as possible. It does have a lowerable sun screen, however, so if the sunlight is undesirable that can be easily remedied. Even though it's a direct view of Elryn's station, the station itself is quite low to the floor of the balcony, so it's also a direct view of the area surrounding the Tower, which can be quite breathtaking in the right light. The floor is essentially grass, and sometimes needs to be watered or mowed to maintain it. The walls are covered in a sky-patterned wallpaper, enchanted to reflect the sky outside unless the spell is altered for whatever reason. This room is usually furnished with squishy lawn chairs, a small patio table, and a grill for when we want a cook-out party but can't do it on the balcony due to weather, but other furniture is regularly swapped out as desired.

The southwest room, the 2nd largest room on the floor, is a sort of multipurpose room, similar to the Room of Requirement in function. Just state what you need and it will automatically transform to meet your needs (except for food and water). The only exception is the southwest corner of the room, which is now and forever a pillow corner, easily separated from the rest by a flowing silken silver curtain hanging from the ceiling. The pillows are of all shapes and sizes, but all are guaranteed to be soft and plush and perfect for flopping over into and snuggling. Or pillow fights!

General Discussion / A respectful request.
« Last post by guest74 on September 06, 2017, 05:09:28 pm »
Considering that this is simply a request thread, and in no way, shape, or form a farewell or departure, I felt General Discussion to be the appropriate subforum to place this post.

To begin, I cannot express just how grateful I am to you all for the clan’s participation in the democratic process of our latest vote, and I respect the vote’s outcome as determined by the clan-majority.

However, I cannot reconcile my personal sense of integrity with the idea that I now, as result of this recent vote, inhabit a clan-defined position of privilege where my perspective, opinions, feelings, and concerns should outweigh at any time those of another person within the shared spaces of the Beacons of Hope.

While I understand and support a hierarchy of permissions, I cannot personally reconcile my participation as a privileged member in a hierarchy of rights, where there is a discrepancy in the value given to a person’s perspective and experience based on which group they belong to. I do not have any wish for my perspective to be given more value than any other person’s, nor do I feel like I can ensure that fairness of treatment between myself and others unless I inhabit a position that assumes absolutely zero superiority of rights over any other person.

Therefore, I would like to submit this post as my official request to be lowered indefinitely to the rank of Guest.

This doesn’t mean that I have any intentions of vanishing from chat or clan spaces! The Beacons of Hope and its community have always been both blessing and refuge for me over the years, first as Faerdin’s-girlfriend-guest, and then as a Member myself. I still very deeply feel tied to the compassion, creativity, honor, and upliftingness I’ve experienced here — all of which have defined my understanding of what it means to be a Beacon, and shaped how I have endeavored to act as one myself.

Right now, I just feel it most appropriate for me to adjust my own standing in regards to the clan, in order to respect what has been fairly and democratically decided by clan-majority to be the clan’s opinion on this issue, while still staying true to my personal sense of integrity.

I’m grateful to every single participant of BoH’s community for their understanding in my decision. And if by chance you have any questions, I welcome and encourage y’all to chat with me directly! I will always be happy to talk with others towards the goal of the clearest communication and understanding possible (hence this thread).

Thank you all, once more, endlessly and with every ounce of my gratitude and respect.

Forum Games / Ask Big Questions
« Last post by Starflame on August 24, 2017, 04:19:22 pm »
So not quite a game, but this looks like a good place for this!!

My Hillel has these discussion called "Ask Big Questions", as a way to open up with each other and communicate. A "Big Question" is a question anyone can answer that focuses on personal experiences, uses plain language, and invites people in to share stories, participate in discussions, and really listen to each other.

"Big Questions" generally are very open-ended, relatively short, and begin with "How", "Who", "What", "When", or "Where" (though other, more specific questions can be included to facilitate discussion).

How this game/discussion will work is a "Big Question" will be presented, with others added if necessary, and people will be able to answer/discuss it! After a couple weeks (or whenever someone feels the discussion is over), a new question can be asked!

I have a couple books with questions Hillel uses, so I'll start with one of those.

When are you brave?
Follow up questions if needed:
When have you acted bravely?
Have you ever wished you had been braver?
Have you ever regretted being brave?

General Discussion / Re: Beacon anniversary Event?

I like that idea!! I'm not sure when exactly the Beacons were officially formed, but it'd be cool to organize a giant "board game" or open-mic night. Maybe similar to one of the old skype parties, just set a time for a few hours where we'll have a "party" room/voice chat combo?
